Tuesday, October 7th, 2008: Tampa's Sanchez Gets FSL Pitcher of the Year
The Florida State League announced today that Humberto Sanchez has been chosen the FSL Pitcher of the Year winner for 2008. The Tampa hurler had everything working for him as he cruised to a outstanding 18-6 record.

Sanchez put up an impressive 2.53 ERA in his award-winning season. He started 31 times, worked 202.2 innings, yielded 165 hits, walked 65, fanned 200 and held opposing hitters to a .220 average.

The SION Baseball Writers Association will honor all of the award winners this weekend at its annual meeting.

Monday, September 1st, 2008: August's Best Starter Named in FSL
Mark Pawelek of the Tampa Yankees strung a bunch of high quality starts together in August to earn the Florida State League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

For the month he finished with a superlative 5 wins and no losses and a 1.29 ERA. The Tampa star started 5 games, pitched 35 innings and struck out 31.

This season to date, Pawelek has fashioned a 16-7 mark and 2.30 ERA in 191.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .231 against him and he has logged 160 strikeouts.

Friday, August 22nd, 2008: Reliever Jonathan Ortiz Hurt
Jonathan Ortiz at first refused to leave today's Dunedin-Tampa game after he suffered a strained back muscle while throwing a pitch. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I'm a competitor," the feisty Tampa reliever said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Ortiz out of action for 3-4 weeks.

So far this season Ortiz is 1-and-4 with no saves and a 4.09 ERA. He has given up 80 hits in 83.2 innings with 59 strikeouts.
