Detroit starting pitcher Justin Verlander has a strained back muscle, suffered while throwing a pitch. He's expected to be out for 1-2 weeks.

Monday, November 17th, 2008: 3B Cabrera Opts for Extension
Miguel Cabrera is staying put. The Detroit Tigers third baseman inked a $68,560,000 extension, and will play in Detroit another 4 years.

Lifetime Cabrera has played in 877 games with a .309 batting average. Among his 1026 hits are 218 doubles, 10 triples and 166 home runs. He also has scored 544 runs and driven in 628 runs.

Monday, October 13th, 2008: Vazquez Holds Detroit Scoreless
Javier Vazquez of Seattle easily handled the Detroit Tigers, stopping them on 1 hit and chucking a complete game 7-0 shutout.

"He really did a job on us," said the Detroit manager. "He had good command of his pitches. He changed speeds well and pretty much confused us. We never could zero in on him, but he certainly zeroed in on us."

Vazquez said, "Everything was working for me. Throwing my breaking stuff over the plate was big."

He finished the game with 11 strikeouts and no walks in a solid outing.

On his stats sheet this season Vazquez shows a 11-12 record, 32 starts, 217 innings, 213 strikeouts and a 3.65 ERA.
